Will there be an actual "open" beta as the release date nears? I surfed their forums for a while, and the site, but couldn't find any definitive info either way.

No. The beta that is running now is the only one.

The open beta is currently running. You either had to get a key from Funcom themselves, or subscribe to Fileplanet.
The beta is nothing more then a stress test anyway. Many people were expecting a fully playable game, boy were they shocked.

Gotcha. I just thought that I had read somewhere that Funcom was releasing gradually more beta keys (other than the 50k at Fileplanet) up until the 17th. Guess not.
Also, I do realize it was a stress test, which is why I'm quite confused on any kind of limit to the "open" beta. But that's been discussed up and down, so I won't say anymore. I'll just have to pre-order, no biggie.

Fileplant is offering 10,000 FREE beta keys for AoC. All you need to do is register a free account with them, and then patiently wait for keys to arrive. Be quick!

Do that if your connection is good enough to download 12GB fast I think the Open Beta will close in a week when early access downloads for the retail version starts. So not a lot of time left to download and level up.
But if you haven't preordered it, I'd still recommend getting the Open Beta just to see Tortage in its full glory(assuming your machine can handle it). Whatever else one might say about the game, Tortage is just beautiful.

And if you cant afford that, then you cant really be affording computer games either
And IMO Warhammer looks like pants compared to AoC. Its just another WoW clone - zomg humans, orcs and elves!!!!
Give me something new please. Oh wait, AoC is new.
|
wait a minute, AoC is new? almost everything has been done before, only new thing is the defense with shields.
And you're really a fanboy, aren't you? AoC has so many flaws it's crazy, yes i've tried it, even GW have better graphics and doesn't need a giant PC.
and the loading screen every 5 minutes is awesome?
And just because you don't like WoW graphics, then there's no need to say something as stupid as what you said, WoW has nice graphics for the eyes, it's not to bright or detailed, so you concentrate more on fighitng han looking on things.
now if i didn't know better i would surely think you were hired by the AoC developers to show "all the awesome stuff AoC has".
don't come here and say AoC will be awesome, before it's true, it lacks so many things that it's not even worth mentioning.
as i said previously, in 2 months, many people will go back to their old games.
Don't get me wrong, i'm gonna have AoC on my computer also, to see of they fix all their bullshit within a few months.
Have a nice day.

Okay, let's face it: AoC is officially by http://forums.darkfallonline.com/index.php
Guess where i belong. Yes, to darkfall. And aoc is nothing special.
Btw if you say AoC on those forums, you will get flamed.

Easiest way to reply to this post is, sadly, to cut it up. Best for not confusing any readers here:

You are already putting a large chunk of your savings into the fees you pay for your MMO.

Spending an extra fifty cents a day does not put this "huge chunk" in my savings. However, a good $700 in one day would.

Of course it doesn't. But it looks like it'll run with a smooth framerate on my pc. That right there tips the scale, for *me*, in WAR's favor.

Plenty of players are fed up of WoW's gameplay and are looking for something new. They dont just want another WoW clone, and TBH, most MMORPGs that fail are direct WoW clones, not a brand new type of gameplay like AoC is.
|
I've known many who've said the same thing, but also many who've said the exact opposite. All in all, the gameplay does look interesting, and I would like to try it out just for that.
A little side note: If everyone didn't want a WoW clone, why is LotRO the only other "successful" MMO, the one MMO that feels almost directly like WoW's gameplay? Most of the other MMO's have been rather different, yet seen little success.

A game doesn't, but an MMO does. That's where things can get problematic. With a game like Crysis, your larger goal is to get the game to sell. With MMO's, your goal is to get the game to sell and keep those buyers *playing*. If you're not able to keep players playing and enjoying your MMO, you'll may very well end up in the same territory as games like Asheron's Call and other "failed" MMO's.

The thing here is that not everyone is a gamer. Some people like to play games in their spare time. The "gamer" population itself is pretty tiny. As Antheus said in another thread, if you're appealing to the "gamers" then already your MMO is going to go downhill a bit.

Yeah well its a debatable decision on what group FunCom targeted the game to be.
1) It's a mature game with nudity, vulgarity and gore. So teenagers and older citizens aren't the target
2) It has extremely high system requirements, so it targets serious gamers instead of someone who might log on a few hours a week(he certainly won't have a high end video card)
3) Its combat system has a fair degree of twitch. Unlike games like WoW, where you could just sit back and mash a couple of buttons all day, active combat system and active defense system is more like FPS games, so again, for part-time gamers, it's too complicated/hard/cumbersome.
I'm not saying these are bad decisions, but they certainly reduce the market size. But that said, you have to give kudos to gem to aim their product at a particular market, stick to it, and create the entire game based on that.
So it won't be anywhere as successful as WoW. Doesn't matter, a WoW-killer is impossible and is a stupid thing to aim for. Play to your strengths, which in Conan in the brutal world which has a lot of lore to back up and the extremely good graphics.
While I have preordered the game and am looking forward to it, I still have concerns over many areas. But honestly, stop comparing it with other games. If you're happy with other games, stick to it. A significant amount of Conan buyers will be
a) People who have done everything they can do in GW, and are looking for a more 'pure MMO' instead of sticking to GW and waiting for GW2
b) People who've given up on Vanguard
c) People(like me) who've done a lot of raiding and pvp in WoW, and are just looking for new content.
etc
So look on the game(for now) as something new and promising instead of being a revolutionary trendsetter, and everyone's happy

Ok, just per-ordered regular edition from Gamestop (War Mammoth GO!).
Haven't seen anything worth while for the Collector's Edition, though the Drinking cape sounds fun (FREE DRINKS!).
Any advice from people playing the beta about Ranger type classes?
Strengths/problems with the PVE only or PVP only servers.
I want to stay with the regular PVE environment, but then again, FFA PVP sounds like an added challenge.

If you don't care much about FotM, rangers are an exciting class to play. They were OP in closed beta, got nerfed too hard, and apparently bow damage is bugged or something, so their damage isn't that great atm. But I wouldn't be worried about class balance this early on. They certainly have good gameplay.
